8 Oct Guangdong; Arriving in Guangzhou for a 2+1 weeks confinement period in a hotel chosen by the authorities. After many administrative papers filled, a PCR and ADN test, you go finally out of the airport. Without the help of chinese people with you, it is almost impossible to understand all the procedures. Then you climb in a bus without knowing where you go. The hotel is given randomly. They call it Blind Box. You don’t know what you get until you open it ! Let’s hope we will be lucky ! The positive thing is you make friends very quickly ! havas #vivendi #china #quarantine #teamspirit

Gaoming, Guangdong Day 2 : after exiting the airport, we took the bus to an unknown destination. We drove 2h, 80 kms to arrive in Gaoming, 80km outside Guangzhou, under the rain. Morale was low as it was rumoured we would go to a 2 star Chinese hotel. Thank god I brought my food with me so I was ready for the worse. We got lucky. The 25 people of the bus were assigned to a new good hotel on a lake. Astronauts were waiting for us at the hotel. The rooms are ok. A balcony but you cannot get onto it as the window only opens 10cm. We cannot complain, it could have been much worse. 14 days or 21 days quarantine here, it is not yet clear. #guangzhou #gaoming #china #quarantine #vivendi #havas

10oct, Foshan, Guangdong; Day 3 quarantine in Foshan. Two good news today : the staff gave me back the passport they were holding. (It is always a good sign to get one’s passport back). It takes time to understand the strict rules of this place but the staff does its best. They work dressed like that under a temperature of 30C. The second good news is the Chinese food they provide us is pretty good and goes very well with the wine, ham and bread I brought from France. #sofarsogood #quarantine #china #havas #vivendi

16 oct; Foshan, Guangdong; Quarantine end of week 1 : let’s celebrate 🎉✊! One more week to go and we will flying to Shanghai. There, we will be relatively free. Only regular check ups at the hospital. Here I cannot complain : we have daily temperature checks and 4 PCR tests in a week but thanks god, I am negative. The plane arriving from France before ours had 6 positive cases and these people were immediately isolated for I have been told at least 3 weeks in a hospital. Not going out of a room for a week now, it’s amazing how fast primary functions become suddenly essential : eating ok, sleeping well, remaining in good condition and walking. For me it is all about discipline : continuing to shave, dressing properly, building a routine, watching what I eat and walking. At the beginning I did not walk enough and I started to feel it very rapidly. So even in the room I walk as much as I can and I feel the difference ! My apple app checks my progress. The hotel’s food is not the best but my friends managed to get me fruits delivered to the room. I tried to order a pizza one day because I missed junk western food so much but it was refused by the police 😅. Between work, Chinese lessons, reading, series etc time goes by. This is a strange feeling with ups and downs sometimes. But friends and family are here. And sometimes my astronaut friends pay me a visit in the room to fix the internet. And no pain no gain as they say. Anyway, it reminds me how sweet our Life is outside ! A life with a big L ! To be continued…enjoy your weekend. #quarantine#China#havas#vivendi

21oct; Foshan, Guangdong, Chinese Chronicles #6. Opening my door to the hotel corridor, to freedom! In two days, we are out of here! The last days are more difficult, impatience is growing. I am counting the hours, as in my childhood, when I was waiting for something big to happen. Losing track of the days during week 2 is easy, the feeling of having to relive the same day repeatedly. I sometimes feel like Bill Murray in “un jour sans fin”, the “Groundhog Day”! At the same time, it is sometimes a nice sensation, being cut off from the world. But man is by nature a social animal! And working, walking, making phone calls with friends and family is not enough. So I’m so haaappyy to go back to the normal world soon. We had so many PCR and temperature checks during this stay I cannot even count them, but for sure more than 10 PCR tests in 2 weeks. This morning only, what they call “Double Harvest”: 4PCR tests, 2 throat exams and 1 temperature check. They are providing us with reinforced masks and sterile rubber surgical gloves for our departure. No risk is taken before our release, that’s obvious! This is so impressive. But then I will get the precious green code (but for the Guangzhou area only), and off to Shanghai! To be continued…#china #waragainstbacteria #havas #vivendi

29oct; Chinese Chronicles #7. Day 21. The 2weeks + 1week quarantine is OVER! The trip from Guangzhou to Shanghai was just a dream come true. Seeing people again, being able to walk outside was like rediscovering life and taste (yes food is not only functional finally, but it can also have good taste, I forgot it so quickly). The third week of quarantine was very “cool” if some conditions are fulfilled : go to a certain type of hotel where temperature checks are easy, report this temperature twice a day to a District Committee and avoid going out in public places until the 21st day. We also had to do two more PCR tests on the 16th and the 21st day. But apart from that, free to go! We therefore decided to seize this opportunity and walked over 10kms every morning in the city. How great it is to feel the city life again! Getting the green health code was very complicated for a foreigner but we finally did it. And the reward was to be able to go out last night to celebrate the 21st day, which happened to be a great client event, with no masks ! As you can imagine, this will stay in our memories. Some regions of China are now closing because of Covid but Shanghai is for the moment very safe. We are staying in this region until Nov 11, so everything should be ok! Beijing should however be more difficult to get to. We’ll see…To be continued…#china #waragainstbacteria #havas #vivendi

4 Nov Shanghai; Chinese Chronicles #8. Day 28. One week that we are totally free in Shanghai. The one thing that continues to impress me is this: “Everything is mobile”. Not everything the western way, everything the Chinese way, it is extreme. It is a 100% mobile country. No wechat, no life. I wonder how the older people cope with it here. For the non-Chinese residents, it is a problem not being able to have a Chinese bank account to link it to wechat pay and Alipay. Western visa and amex cards often don’t work! So, cash can become the last solution…which is a very awkward payment solution here. This week, there has been an immense pressure again on the country due to Covid. 19 regions out of 31 are under strict surveillance now. The government closed Disneyland Shanghai during Halloween for one positive case! The 30000 people inside had to be immediately tested. This week, we still did 2 PCR tests to be able to attend events. The 14th PCR test since we arrived in the country. They now do the double harvest, two in the nose and one in the throat. At the end you get used to it. I breathe so much better by the nose now 😉 The hospitals are impressive, by the number of people there and by the organization. Meetings and health tests make our days very busy. But here we are, tomorrow is the beginning of the 4th China International Import Expo, opened by President Xi himself! Many meetings there over the weekend…then Beijing next week, hopefully we will be able to get there despite the covid situation. 12 Nov Beijing; Chinese Chronicles #9. Day 35. This week, despite the Covid Threat to restrict business and travels, was very intense: Many meetings in Shanghai and Hangzhou with businesses and governments entities. The reputation of China is real : they are very hard-working people, with a strong sense of commitment in what they do, weekends included. The 4th China International Import Expo started last week, initiated by the Chinese Government to enhance international economic cooperation. As there were only a few foreigners, and the controls very strict, it took me over 3 hours to get in after a PCR test (again), and a scanning machine refusing continuously to acknowledge my negative covid results. Seeing my face in red in front of the police was definitely a “lost in translation” experience…Once in, a gigantic size, high-level summits, 3000 exhibitors from 127 countries, including major French brands: Decathlon, Sanofi, LVMH, L’Oréal…All regions of China come here to develop their business.Taking the metro back to Central Shanghai was also a humbling experience, feeling very little in this huge crowd. We then went off to Hangzhou, 200kms away from Shanghai, the 8th city of China with only (!) a 11 million population, developing itself at an impressive pace and creating not the Silicon Valley but the “Intelligence Valley” in the Gongshu district before welcoming the Asian Games in September 22. Interestingly, in one of the meetings, two people were named Lin Yao. In Pinyin, it is the same, but the tone of pronunciation is different and the writing in sinograms is different. Discovering the subtleties of Chinese.Next stop Beijing. By Train. To be continued…#havas#vivendi#china#CIIE#Hangzhou#Shanghai

21 Nov Beijing; Chinese Chronicles #12. Day 44. This week, Beijing.Beijing is supposed to be a “no go” zone, with travel restrictions due to Covid. Some cases were identified there a week ago, so no risk is taken before the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022. We however managed to get there, without too many strict controls (or maybe we are getting used to be controlled, this becomes the new normal). The Beijing South Railway Station was nearly empty and quiet, compared to the usual craziness. Even the restaurants are not as crowded as usual. Many meetings happened during the week, with Chinese and French authorities and business representatives. They all went very well; they were so surprised to meet visitors and especially a foreigner! They had not seen any one from abroad for two years. They were very nice, welcoming, eager to know what China’s image is in Europe, and hoping the current difficulties will vanish one day. They were however very cautious. Some meetings were held outside their office, to avoid any contamination and the officials here in Beijing do not have the right to leave the city. Many official meetings in other regions are also cancelled. Do I have to mention again the PCR tests we had to do before having any meeting in an official building? This week, this is my 16th PCR test since I arrived. The pollution conditions here remain a problem, out of 7 days, we had 3 days of heavy pollution clouds and 4 days of clear skies. Clearly complex to live for the inhabitants. Moving away from the carbon industries clearly becomes a priority when you spend some time here, you see it affects daily life. 28 Nov Shanghai; Chinese Chronicles #13. Day 51. This week, Shanghai.Traveling between Beijing and Shanghai takes 4h30 by train. It is much easier, cheaper, and more comfortable than the airplane and above all, there are less controls. It remains a very Chinese experience, traveling at 350Km/h in Chinese style seats and Chinese train food aboard (a much better food than the SNCF).Arriving in Shanghai, the green code changes. It is a different one from Beijing, they have a regional approach. But as we were in Shanghai before, it automatically switches back to green, even for me as a foreigner, which is great, compared to all the administrative problems I encountered at the beginning of my journey. The hotel registration is very intrusive for a westerner, using facial recognition and asking for all your details. Forget about being here unknown. The system knows where you are, at what time your registered, from what city you come etc etc…It is the same when you walk in the streets. No one would dare crossing the streets when the pedestrian crossing is red. There are cameras everywhere that would identify your bad behavior immediately. Many meetings again this week but a few walks in the morning. Seeing a park made me realize how much I missed being in nature, after all these urban weeks. We hope we will be able to leave Shanghai to Guangzhou as planned as 3 cases of Covid in our area happened. As a result, hundreds of flights were cancelled. Favorieten  · 2ip2otsr2e1udg  · Kanton, Guangdong, Volksrepubliek China  · Chinese Chronicles #14. Day 59. This week, Guangzhou. The best way to travel from Shanghai to Guangzhou is the plane. Then trouble started again. A PCR test before leaving the city and another one on the arrival to Guangzhou. We got very lucky to be able to fly there as our trip nearly got canceled. 3 cases of Covid were detected 24 hours before in Shanghai. Hundreds of flights again got canceled. We received an email the day before our departure from the authorities of Guangzhou, saying that according to the latest requirements of pandemic prevention and control, if we had traveled or resided in Shanghai Pudong and Huangpou district, we were temporarily suspended from traveling to Guangzhou. We were lucky enough to live in the Jing An district, 3 kms away, so we were able to go. Arriving there we had to queue to do my 18th PCR test, which becomes a habit, quite natural. Then a very busy week of meetings to meet colleagues, French and Chinese representatives, with a PCR test nearly every day to be able to enter official buildings. I have celebrated my 22nd PCR test since my arrival! This has become the new normal when you travel in the country. At the same time, I was discovering the news about the new burst of Covid in Europe. Different approaches, really. The city of Guangzhou is in the South, very welcoming and much warmer, which is nice, really. No more winter clothes ! Next week Hainan and then back home.
